This sweet spring family photo session was such a delight. I was excited to be shooting at this beautiful location again and also a different time of day as I was doing this session mid-morning at the Myriad Botanical Gardens during their tulip season.
“When is the best time to take photos?” is the question I am often asked by families inquiring about doing a session with me. And my quick reply for outdoor family sessions will always be, “golden hour!” The light is the creamiest. It gives beautiful golden hues and because it’s quickly changing also allows for a variety of lighting settings.
Family Photo Session Timing
But I realize that timing isn’t always great for everyone. Often in summer it can be quite late in the evening (believe me it’s worth it!). So if that light is not the type of photos you are dreaming of then there are a few more options we can work with.
Early morning golden hour can be another great option. You get great locations with zero people and beautiful creamy light.
Our next option then is mid-morning. The sun is not as harsh yet so if we have some good shade, you can make it work well! The photos won’t have the golden hour glow and we won’t be shooting in a wide open field but we can still make gorgeous portraits that you can treasure for years to come.
