how to choose a newborn photographer

Big sister sits snuggled up with mom and dad and her newborn baby brother during a newborn lifestyle photo session.

You and your family are excitedly prepping for welcoming a new little one into your home. You know that this is a season you must get professional newborn photos of! There’s so many different questions you likely have but first off…

What type of newborn photo session do you want?

or rather – how to choose between a studio newborn photographer or an in home lifestyle newborn photographer.

OKC In Home Newborn Photographer

Hiring a newborn photographer is such a beautiful way to celebrate the birth of your baby. There are thousands of photographers to choose from and hundreds of styles. And as you search for the “perfect” photographer for you and your family you realize one of the biggest questions is do you want studio photos or lifestyle photos?

Lifestyle newborn sessions are sessions full of love, emotion and connection to showcase you and your baby in a comfortable, relaxed setting – i.e. the place you are most at home – your home!

If you are struggling to decide or even known the difference…check out this pin for examples of what studio newborn photography is like. Studio photos are about putting the baby into certain positions to achieve photos with certain poses or props. You will often be provided clothes to wear and get photos of the baby with different props like buckets or animals or baskets. You will get consistent light and all the photos will have the same look. You usually must go to the studio (a few photographers will come to your home and set up for an extra fee.) A typical studio session can last up to 3 hrs and must be done before the baby is 10 days old.

Why Choose Lifestyle In Home Newborn Photos

Lifestyle newborn photography puts the emphasis on connection and capturing the baby in it’s natural setting. I do not forcing the baby into unnatural poses and allow baby to move organically. We focus on photos of the baby with mom and dad and siblings. Focusing on capturing the connection and love. For in home newborn photography check out my portfolio! 🙂

The best parts of newborn lifestyle photography…

Comfortable – you don’t have to go anywhere. Don’t worry about packing your diaper bag or whether your baby will nurse in a strange environment or whether you packed enough formula along. You also don’t have to stress about baby sleeping. If baby sleeps during my sessions that’s great but if baby is awake it’s not a problem (unlike in studio they need to be asleep for the signature photos). Sessions are also shorter and run 60-90 minutes. You don’t have to put in strict poses or wear clothes that feel so not you.

Flexible – You also don’t have to stress about baby sleeping. If baby sleeps during my sessions that’s great but if baby is awake it’s not a problem (unlike in studio they need to be asleep for the signature photos). Sessions are also shorter and run 60-90 minutes.

Lifestyle Newborn photos also have a wider range of when they can be taken. Any time within the first month works. Meaning if you feel you need a little more time to recover then you can!

Incorporates your setting which in turns helps tell your child a little bit about this chapter of their life. It also makes it much better for siblings (no new weird places.) Pets and family members are welcome!

Unique – no one else has your home so your photos are special to you.

We traveled through OKC on our cross country trip to VA last night 😉 Just wanted to say that I love this blog post. It’s extremely helpful for new moms trying to navigate through a saturated market of photographers.
