We all take photos daily, sometimes even hourly. With that little handy pocket phone we have a thousand of memories stored away….
Many of them we might look at months down the road but for the most part they stayed in that little digital box. A memory tucked away out of sight.
Why should you print those photos? Why should you get storytelling photos of your family?
After all…shouldn’t you want to only print the best. Print the retouched portraits. You know the cleaned up parts not the messy parts….
Photographs are a physical capture of story. Stories are the theme of human history and the weavings of our sum of our lives. You don’t have to be an important figure in politics or medicine or business to be writing a life story. The story of you and your children is being written in the daily events.
Printed photos tell your story
From that first married kiss, to the tiny finger prints on your window photos of these events gather the meaningful parts of our lives and help remember it. Remember those mountain high moments and the ordinary days the are the roots of our existence. I love the having both candid and specially captured photos mixed in around our home. They help me to remember “I only have this moment once.” As Mary Martenz says, “Life goes along and this moment is gone and that moment is gone. But photography steps in and says ‘Not this one.’ This moment stays.”
2. Printed photos are connections
When my girls see photos of themselves they squeal. My daughters spend hours every week looks through their photo albums. (Another post – PRINT lay flat albums for your little ones. They can turn the pages and the pages won’t tare.) These photos are of them with family, with friends, doing their favorite things. They get to see how I see them – adorable, special, wonderful.
“Family photography lets children learn who they are and where they fit. They learn their genealogy and the uniqueness of their own family and its story. When a child sees a family portrait with them included in the photograph they say to themselves: ‘These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.’” – Judy Weiser, licensed psychologist
3. Printed photos are family treasures
Some of my most precious memories are photos I have of me with my grandparents. When I start trying to find pictures of my teenage years they sit on random CD’s…and now days it would be random google accounts. It feels like they are safe but the reality is those get lost and forgotten just as easily as an old roll of film.
4. Printed photos get seen by more than just you
Let others appreciate the beauty of your life. Let others see the moments you love. Instead of in a pixelated folder these beautiful moments get to be loved and appreciated by many. When a friend walks in your door they get to know more about who you are by the photos on your wall.
5. Printed photos let you touch the story.
We daily learn more and more the importance of doing stuff with our hands. Most children learn better when actually moving things, touching things, drawing letters in sand or rice. The importance of substance is a need we realize more daily. And that’s why this quote by a licensed psychologist is profound “Touching the photograph where a face is smiling, it is the same thing as touching a book when you read it. There’s a lot of stimulation of the brain when you have that sensory experience. That is a bit lost in the move to digital. You are touching a keyboard, mouse or a touchscreen but you are not touching the image.” (Craig Steinberg, a licensed psychologist who works with children ages five through 13 using phototherapy.)
My next post will share 3 different print products I think every home should have. (hint: one is albums! My girls love paging through their albums. Pointing, touching, finding themselves. I have found spending a little extra to make a book that lasts awhile longer is so worth it! )
